missing
1)
... those days when MacDonald's was still at Far East Plaza. Not that i miss Mac's in particular. But its closing sort of marked the end of that era. Before the Harajuku syndrome descended upon the place, with plasticated pinky pseudo-Jap fashion shops started i figure, the people who worked there probably did it. Cross colour jeans were in, not that i miss that aspect of fashion *shudder*. Ah-lian shops where relatively scarce: they were the pioneers of This Fashion ok, don't play play hor. Livia was still new and a wonderland to accessory junkies like me. By golly gee how many of you still remember Chua Joo Huat, the cheapest place to get the latest CDs?!? And of course, there was...
Beer House.
Sensational lemon-chicken rice, and beer that didn't need an ID.Woot.All thanks to Beer Uncle. But Beer Auntie got wind of it after a while and refused to serve us beer. I remember her sorta reprimanding us, telling us we might get them into trouble, that there had been complaints, while Beer Uncle stood silently in the background with a mournful, apologetic expression. Beer Uncle was one kind of character altogether man. He was like some Chinese Red Indian with a cheena accent. Long hair, tanned wrinkly face.
So daring, for two schoolgirls in their school uniform somemore. ;-) I was a wild child in my own way.*smirk*
2)The gigantic screen at the ground level in Takashimaya that played MTV after MTV after MTV after... well i pretty much used to hang out there the whole afternoon just watching them. Do school kids still hang out there? I dunno man, how to? When there is always some Chinese New Year/Mooncake/Tourism/Pasar Malam thing going on in the centre.
then there was baked rice at Times Square, a cafeteria cum restaurant where the U2 or something is now, opposite side of the supermarket/foodcourt part.It was the best, better than the half-cooked crap version that Swensen's has. Oh wait come to think of it, i think Times Square was owned by them.hmmm.
3)Planet Hollywood in Liat Towers. Owning and wearing a P.H. T-shirt, what a prestige man. hahhhha.
4)when no 106,190,171 were still SBS buses.
5)when it was still against most school rules for girls to pull up their socks. Those who did were, well, simply ah-lian or ai-lian-buay-lian (trying to be ahlian but were simply not capable of being ah-lian). Hush puppy socks (with the puppy emblem at the side of each sock) were the rage, man. I had em (but i never pull up all the way, ok!)
6) Playing the saxophone. i lived, ate, drank and slept band practice. The only thing i regret: thinking that Kenny G was cool.
7)I was 5 kg lighter.
8)It was fun having crushes. I know i know, so schoolgirlish but i was one, what.
9)Singaporean bands frequented the airwaves far more than now i believe. The bands. The bands! Whatever happened to the Lilac Saints man. Naked, Lizard's Convention, Naked, Humpback Oak (incidentally, their's was the first CD i ever bought.1995.)... I never really listened to the Padres but yes i know of them.
10)secondary school days. P.E., spending the night in school working on art projects, prowling the campus and scaring ourselves, chicken chop from the Malay food stall, Mr Hubert Yohannan, Mr Terence Goh, Ms Wong Kar Foon, Mrs Chin,Mr Yong Ah Sau, Mr Tan Boon Cheng. You people took a step to reach out to us and tell us that we were not what the rest of the school, or the rest of society told us we were (hint:stupid Normal.)If i ever have the opportunity to write the script and direct another crappy propagandist advertisement for teaching, I would cast you guys and the rest of the sec 5N1/N2/N3 people in it. Rock onnn man Normal (A) class of 1997, SCSS.
I feel old.
